What is the problem with lasers for melanated skin and light hairs?

The issue with lasers is that they work best on lighter skin tones with darker hairs due to the design of the technology that powers hair removal treatment. Lasers work by targeting the melanin or pigment that gives the skin and hair its color. The laser is directed toward the follicles through which the unwanted hair grows. Once the laser is activated, the beam of light generates heat. This targeted energy/heat “seeks out” the pigment in the target area to destroy the follicles. However, the laser is not designed to distinguish between skin melanin and hair melanin. So, this aspect of treatment can preclude certain potential candidates for hair removal from treatment due to the inability of the laser to effectively and safely treat darker skin and light, blonde, or gray hairs.

What alternatives do you offer to lasers?

Once these follicles are treated, they are destroyed for good. This makes electrolysis the only permanent solution to remove unwanted hair, as recognized by the FDA. Additionally, it is a highly inclusive treatment. Individuals with melanated skin and lighter hairs can get real, sustained results without the risk of thermal damage to the skin and other complications (like hyper & hypopigmentation at the treatment site and scarring). That’s because electrolysis does not produce heat from other forms of energy, be it laser light or radiofrequency (RF). It also does not rely on “seeking out” melanin pigment to target and damage unwanted hairs. The electrolysis service treats the stem cells inside of the hair follicles instead. Since the stem cells function to regrow hair, once they are gone, further regrowth is inhibited permanently.

But isn’t electrolysis painful and time-consuming?

Not our version of electrolysis! We use an alternative form of electrolysis called multi-probe galvanic electrolysis. This alternative is 30% to 40% faster than conventional treatments. You spend less time in treatment with the probes or tools for treatment in contact with the hair follicles. In fact, we can achieve permanent results in as fast as 18-24 months because our advanced process utilizes between 16 to 32 probes during a treatment. The probes are gently introduced to the follicles to deliver the electric current that targets and damages stem cells. Conventional treatments use just a single probe to treat each hair follicle, which can add considerable time to the process. This characteristic supports a better treatment experience, as does the fact that we do not generate heating. By avoiding heat, treatment is more comfortable. We also use a special, electrologist-designed calm balm to ease any lingering tenderness or irritation afterward.

Is it right for my hair type?

It’s appropriate for any hair type, so yes! Remember, we are targeting the stem cells within each hair follicle. The probe/current does not have to distinguish between certain skin or hair types to effectively and safely remove hairs.
